Student Support

Whole Child Approach

When thinking about the best way to educate and care for children, we believe in a whole child approach. This holistic, proactive view of education includes the developmental, academic, social, spiritual, and emotional elements of each student.

Alphonsus is proud to offer a large full-time student support staff. In addition to our Director of Student Services, we have two licensed counselors, three learning specialists, a school nurse, a high school counselor, and an instructional coach to support teacher curriculum development. Together, our Student Support Team (SST) collaborates alongside classroom teachers to best serve our students’ academic, social-emotional, and behavioral needs.

Academic Support

Our learning specialists work with teachers to provide support for students who are struggling to meet grade level expectations in reading, writing, and math. To meet the needs of these students, our learning specialists offer a range of supports that include pushing into the classroom, pulling small groups, or even working with students one-on-one. The constant collaboration between the classroom teachers and learning specialists means that student needs are met immediately and no student falls through the cracks.

Social Emotional Learning

Starting in preschool and continuing through to 8th grade, Alphonsus values the social-emotional growth of our students. In Preschool-2nd grade, teachers and counselors provide social-emotional lessons that are incorporated into their morning meeting. They learn the foundational skills necessary to build a respectful and kind classroom community. In 3rd-8th grades, students have a social-emotional learning class that goes deeper into the 5 Core Competencies of Social Emotional Learning. These include self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.

In addition to teaching classes, our counselors also work with students in small groups or one-on-one to provide more focused support for those who need it.
